Benjamin "Buck" Ellis (1824-1911)

Benjamin "Buck" Ellis was the son of Benjamin Ellis III and Sally Lurena Shrum.  Buck was probably born in Montgomery Count, Missouri on 10 September 1824 and died on 13 February 1911 in Wright County, Missouri.  He is buried in Family Cemetery, Wright County, Missouri.

The information below was taken from "From Missouri to Indian Territory, The Descendants of Benjamin "Buck" Ellis and Rachel Ketchersides" compiled by Betty Rose Gregory, November 1985 and Edward Gregory.

Buck Ellis married Rachel Mildred Ketchersides on 5 July 1846 at the age of 21 in Missouri.

Children of Buck Ellis and Rachel Ketcherside were:

Mary Ann Ellis (1847-1915)

Benjamin Franklin Ellis (1848-)

William Preston Ellis (1849-1914)

Asa Ellis (1853-)

All the children were born in Wright County Missouri.  The four of them apparently came to Oklahoma Indian Territory, some by way of Texas.  Rachel died in 1853 at the age of 28. Buck then married Mary Ann Boatman in 1854.  Buck and Mary had nine children.

A number of descendants of Buck's and Rachel's children reside in the Mountain Grove, Wright County, Missouri area today.  Mary Ann's children were born in Wright County, Missouri.  She later came to Oklahoma Indian Territory and settled in the Hartshorne area.  Asa raised his family in the same area and eventually went to New Mexico in the Roswell area, where he was living at the time of his death.  Betty Rose Gregory who wrote this account does not know what happened to Benjamin.

It is known that William Preston Ellis came to Oklahoma Indian Territory from Texas and settled near Mill Creek probably about 1889-1890.  The author's (Betty Rose Gregory) grandfather Gregory had also come to Mill Creek from Texas about the same time.  Betty Rose Gregory, started looking for both families in Texas. They first found William Preston on the 1870 Red River County tax rolls and then in Cooke County Texas.  On a trip to Texas in 1981, Betty found a probate record in the court house in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas, that proves beyond an doubt that my (Edward Gregory) maternal grandmother was Elizabeth L. Boatman, daughter of Richard Boatman and Mary Caroline Garrett.

Betty and Edward Gregory believe that Elizabeth is a niece of Mary Ann Boatman, Buck's second wife.  If this is correct, William Preston married his step-mother's niece.   They included a copy of these probate records.  These records list the children and their ages.  The children of William Preston and Elizabeth were all born in the Burns City, Texas area.  This is south east of Gainesville, Texas.  Copies of deeds which are quite interesting are also included.  The legal records which are part of this family history were copied exactly as the words are spelled in the official courthouse records.  The official documents were photo copied at the court house and typed for easier reading.  A copy of the Marriage License for W. P. Ellis and Elizabeth Boatman was also included.  It was located in the Cooke County Texas courthouse.  Some of the older grand children as some recollections of W. P., or Pressley as he was known and the children's step-mother, Nan Rhodes.

Obituary printed on February 16, 1911 in either the Hartville Democrat or the Wright County Republican newspaper:

Benjamin Ellis Dead.
"Benjamin Ellis, better known as Uncle Buck Ellis, died at the home of his son Jasper C. Ellis, Monday February 13th (1911) at the age of 80 years. He had been in poor health for several years being totally blind for 12 or 15 years during which time he has lived with his son Jasper, and received the most careful attention that could be bestowed by loving friends.
Uncle Buck came to this community in 1834 at an early age and has since lived in what is Texas and Wright county, then Pulaski. He is the last of his family, and the last of the settlers who immigrated to this county at that date. He was always cheerful and jovial and nothing pleased him more than to recall the days when the nearest neighbor was five miles distant and people went ten miles to a house raising of a neighbor. He is survived by twelve children eight of whom were with him at the time of his death."
