Baron Dekalb Bishop (1862-1926)
Baron Dekalb Bishop was the son of David H. Bishop and Hephzibah Powell. He was born in Westville, Simpson County, Mississippi on 25 February 1852 (Some records list the date as 1862). He died on 29 March 1926 in Monticello, Lawrence County, Mississippi. He is buried in the Masonic Cemetery, Monticello, Lawrence County, Mississippi. He married Jennie Larkin on 15 December 1881. It appears that Baron's name can be attributed to Baron Johann de Kalb who died as a hero of the American Revolution in 1780.
Children of Baron Bishop and Jennie Larkin are:
-
Maude Marrable
Baron Bishop, M. D., was a leading physician and surgeon of Lawrence county and was also incumbent of the office of county superintendent of education, his home and professional and official headquarters being in the thriving little city of Monticello. Dr. Bishop was granted excellent educational advantages, having pursued his higher studies in both the University of Mississippi and the Southwestern Presbyterian university, at Clarksville, Tennessee. He finally entered the medical department of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, where he graduated as a member of the class of 1879, duly securing his degree of Doctor of Medicine and coming forth well fortified for the work of his chosen profession. IN the same year he entered active practice, in Pike and Lawrence counties, and in 1885 he took up residence in Monticello, where he maintained his home and where he built up an excellent professional business. He was a stanch adherent of the Democratic party but was never sought or held office of a specifically political order. In 1889, he was elected superintendent of education for Lawrence county, and the estimate placed upon his services in this connection is best known in the fact that he remained incumbent of the office ten consecutive years, and that in 1903, he was again elected to the office, after an interim of about three years. The educational system of the county owes much to Dr. Bishop and the status of the schools is such as to reflect credit upon the county and its popular and able superintendent of education. Dr. Bishop was affiliated with the Masonic fraternity, is a member of various medical associations, and both he and his wife are members of the Baptist church. On 15 December 1881, he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Larkin, who was born and reared in Lawrence county, being a daughter of Frank and Mary (Kegan) Larkin. They have one child: Maude Marrable.
In the 1860 Census many family members are listed below but they are only show because the Berry's and Bishop's all appeared to live right next to each other. In David H. Bishop's household he had Hephzibah, Martha H., James J., John C., Albert G, Baron D., Ann, Portland C, and Theodocia Bishop living with him.
The 1900 U. S. Census shows Mary Larkin, Jennie's mother living with them in the household. In 1910, Maude and her husband John H. Williams are living in the household along with a servant Alphed Shephard. IN the 1920 Census, Baron is living with his daughter Maude and John and their son, John E. Williams. Baron is listed as a widow. Frank Jennings is a servant living with them.
