A portion
of this lineage comes from the book, "Wilkes Family
History and Genealogy", by Ivan Ernest Bass, 1965,
whom I have been
told is very well researched and very reliable, having been
used by many family members as a key
source for
entry into the DAR. The book has many more interesting
facts, such as their education, occupations and
places of
residence, but because of copyright, I will not publish them
here. I highly recommend it for those research-
ing these
lineages. |

Martha
"Mattie" Russell born October 29, 1877, and died August
28, 1883, burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Covington Co

Martha
and Mattie must have been the same daughter. She
was probably like many others during this time and
started using the name Mattie. However, I did find
in the cemetery listing a Martha F. Russell, b. nd
- d. November 6, 1873, age 16, daughter of James
& S. J. Russell. If the date is indeed the
death date and not the birth date, she could not
have been their daughter. She would have been
the daughter of James Bassel Russell's parents,
James & Sabra A. Russell who are
also
buried in the cemetery. (The difference would only
be between the S. J. & the S. A.) If the date for
Martha F. Russell was her date of birth, there
could have been a daughter named Martha and also a
daughter named Mattie. It does make sense that
Sorena Jane would have named a daugh-
ter Martha
after her mother, Martha Jane Wilkes. |

Hanson and his sister
Susannah's dates of births are
recorded in the Wilkes - Berry Bible, on the top edge of the page,
apart from their own children's births. It does not state that
these are children of William, that information comes from
researchers, and I know of no way to prove their parentage. If
these are indeed children of William, then I would assume that
William and Richard had a close relationship, and thus it makes me
wonder if the
Harrison Berry, aged 18, found in Richard
Talley Berry's home in 1850, may
also be a son of William Berry. One researcher tells us that Hanson
and Susan were raised by Richard Talley Berry, but I think that may
be based on the fact that their births are shown in his Bible
record.
